Fight Fire With Beer – 416 Fire Relief at OBB Taprooms

The 416 Fire has been burning in our home state of Colorado (13 miles North of Durango) since June 1. As of today, the fire’s eaten up 34,177 acres and is 35% contained.* In response, our friends at Ska Brewing in Durango are making a huge fundraising effort to benefit 416 fire relief through the Community Emergency Relief Fund; and we wanna help out.

Many Durango-area visitor attractions including the San Juan National Forest are currently closed, which is potentially damaging to local businesses. In a very rad move, Ska has donated beer to almost every beer-serving establishment in Durango and Silverton to support Beer Tourism during this time. “We want drinking Ska beer to be one more way you can support this cause, so we made it available absolutely everywhere in town,” said Ska Brewing Founder Dave Thibodeau in a recent press release. “Beer itself won’t put this fire out, but damnit I’d hook up the world’s longest hose to one of our tanks if it did.”

Ska has asked other breweries to get involved, and we said, “hell yes.” We’ll donate (more…)

Trailboss Jeff Lenosky’s Bunny-Hop Brewery Tour

See what goes down when world-class mountain bike trials rider Jeff Lenosky, a.k.a. Trailboss, drops by our Longmont Brewery. “I’m always amazed at the places my bike has taken me,” said Lenosky. “I’ve ridden around the world but getting to ride inside a brewery was definitely a unique opportunity!”

Oskar Blues Partners with Keep Tahoe Blue

That moment when you get to the summit of a mountain trail and crack a can o’ Dale’s Pale Ale? We live for that kinda thing. That’s why it’s important to us to help preserve beautiful, natural places where peeps can hike, bike, ride, paddle, swim, run, and generally get their cans outside.

One of those places that inspires folks to get out and play is Lake Tahoe in Northern California. It’s the second deepest lake in the U.S. and boasts 72 beautiful miles of shoreline. The wildlife, awe-inspiring views, and opportunities for adventure draw millions of visitors to The Lake every year.

BA Mocha Ten FIDY in a Taproom Near You

Our O.G. Ten FIDY Imperial Stout got a one-way golden ticket to the inside of a barrel, where it went ass-over-elbows into a Cholaca chocolate river and then hotbox’d with Hotbox Roasters’ coldbrew until it manifested as a smooth mocha mutha – Bourbon Barrel-Aged Mocha Ten FIDY. We’re releasing a very limited amount of this rare liquid on July 7, (World Chocolate Day) at the Oskar Blues Boulder, Longmont, and Brevard Taproom locations.

Bourbon Barrel Aged Ten FIDY (9% ABV) was massively doused with unsweetened pure liquid cacao made by our friends at Cholaca, then dosed with Hotbox Roasters’ cold brew from Mexican coffee beans. Get it in a grande, a venti, or a trenta… just kidding, put it straight in yer mouthhole. “Ten FIDY Imperial Stout doesn’t know how to use its inside voice in the first place; and on this one, we hooked it up to a Cholaca-and-coffee amplifier and turned the volume up to 11,” said Tim Matthews, Head of Brewing Operations for Oskar Blues.

Have you Heard About Our Package?

We started stuffing craft beer into a can in 2002. Back then, it was uncommon for a craft brew to come in a shiny cylindrical package; and some folks straight up thought it was a dumb idea. We get that – we laughed at the idea just like everyone else before we went to Ball Corporation and found out the advantages of the can – better for the beer, better for the environment and better for the beer drinker since the beer is kept fresher and it’s more portable… then we realized it wasn’t something we should do, it was something we HAD to do.

The area in and around our hometown of Lyons, Colorado, offers some of the most rugged, git-down-and-dirty outdoor sports opportunities in the country. Dale is a running, biking, outdoorsy mutha who found a bunch more running, biking, outdoorsy muthas to work for Oskar Blues Brewery. In recent years, we’ve spread the can fever to other places where peeps love to do stuff outside – with breweries in Brevard, NC, and Austin, TX. At all three of our locations our staff takes advantage of local trails, rivers, streams, open spaces, dog parks, people parks, and everywhere in between – and consequently we have a big load o’ respect and awe over our planet. That’s why we think it makes the most sense to take your trail beers with you in a can – they’re easier to pack in and out, and they’re 100% recyclable after you crush ’em. We do it all the time, but don’t take our word for it – grab some cans and get outside.

To learn more about Earth-friendly packaging, check out this vid by our friends at Ball Corp, who’ve been our steadfast partners in leading the craft-in-a-can revolution over the past two decades. Plus, visit the blog again soon for upcoming blurbs about other sustainability efforts including topics like the use of photodegradable six-pack rings, spent grain donation, minimizing packaging, and more.
