LYONS — The rock band Foo Fighters performed Monday afternoon at Oskar Blues in front of a select crowd as part of a private event.

The concert took place in The Barn, a structure that sits just west of Oskar Blues Grill & Brew restaurant and that once served as the brewery’s canning facility.

“It was the coolest thing ever,” said Gayle Gordon, on whose behalf, along with husband Ken Feldman, the concert was staged.

The couple were the local winners of the BlackBerry-sponsored Garage Tour Contest, which they entered through Denver radio station 93.3 FM. Contestants were asked to explain in writing why the Foo Fighters should play a show in their garage.

The concert in fact took place at Oskar Blues instead of the couple’s home, located up Longmont Dam Road, because the Foo Fighters’ road managers worried that an equipment truck would not make it up certain mountain roads, Feldman said.

The couple were allowed to invite 50 of their friends to attend the concert. Some came from as far away as Texas. After the show, they got to hang out at the Oskar Blues bar with band members, including frontman Dave Grohl.

“They’re like the nicest guys,” Gordon said. “They’re very down to earth.”

Grohl reportedly ordered several shots of Petrón tequila.

Oskar Blues learned that it might serve as the concert site last week, according to the venue’s talent buyer and sound engineer, Dave McIntyre. The engagement was not confirmed until Monday.

The performance began at about 4 p.m. and lasted about an hour and a half, venue general manager Chris Portillo said.

“It was better than our wedding,” said Ani Okun, who was in the audience with her husband, Bob. The Okuns, who own FastSigns in Boulder, came to the concert equipped with a banner that read, “Foo Fighters Rock Lyons, Colo.”

Grohl signed the banner with the words, “That was fun.”

The Okuns said they were in the front row for the show.

“The two of us had an amazing mosh pit going,” Ani said.

Feldman said band members remarked that playing to such a small audience in an intimate venue was more fun than playing in front of arena crowds.

“They seemed to be just as excited as we were,” he said.

The couple were restricted in who they could tell about the show, Feldman said. He said half the people he invited to the concert were told only to be sure to request off work Monday afternoon and to arrive at the appointed place.

“I said, ‘If you ever trusted us for anything, trust us now,’” he said.

The Foo Fighters’ latest album, “Wasting Light,” was recorded in Grohl’s garage.

The Garage Tour includes eight stops. The band was scheduled to play a garage in Dallas today.

Quentin Young can be reached at 303-684-5319 or qyoung@times-call.com.

Colorado Craft Beer Expo
Saturday September 4, 2010
1-5pm
Lucky Pie, Louisville, CO

Pre-sale Tickets Available at Lucky Pie

Craft Beer, Food, Fun, Family-friendly

Boulder, CO – Welcome to the second annual Colorado Craft Beer Expo. The goal of the Expo is to bring beers from outside the local market for Colorado Beer Lovers to enjoy.

Just over twenty breweries participated in the first year, with more than sixty beers available to sample responsibly. Colorado Beer Lovers enjoyed the first Colorado Craft Beer Expo and told us to bring it back and make it better. We listened.

Fast-forward a year: today there are more than 1,400 craft breweries in the U.S., and the Colorado Craft Beer Expo has grown, becoming one of Boulder County’s best loved craft beer events. It is the premier end-of-summer event for anyone who loves Colorado craft beer, or is visiting Louisville in September. Located at Lucky Pie in Louisville the Colorado Craft Beer Expo is characteristically Colorado, and the perfect place to spend an afternoon with your family enjoying the finest beer from Colorado Brewers Guild brewers. The Expo showcases esoteric and exotic beer styles. You will love the beer offerings, the food, and the souvenir pint glass.

We realize that Colorado Beer Lovers and the media help spread the word about our successful Expo, and we are extremely appreciative. If there is anything we can do to help you with a story, please don’t hesitate to contact the Guild or Lucky Pie. The Colorado Craft Beer Expo is a fundraiser to support the non-profit Colorado Brewers Guild in its mission to educate and advocate on behalf of the Colorado Craft Brewer.

Tickets available from Lucky Pie: $40 advance / $50 door http://www.coloradobrewersguild.org/news.html

A Tribute to The Beatles

14 Bands/4 hours (7pm to 11pm)

As you know, Last Tuesday Jan 12 a 7.0 magnitude Earthquake devastated the little island of Haiti. Authorities estimated 200,000 dead and 1.5 million homeless in the quake-ravaged heart of this tragic land, where injured sur…vivors still died in the streets, doctors pleaded for help and looters slashed at one another in the rubble.

After seeing a story on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 with Gary Tuchman who reported on two twenty something sisters- Jamie and Alison McMurtrie who run The BRESMA Orphanage in Port-au-Prince- Haiti we felt an urgent need to do something to help these girls who were living out side of the partially collapsed orphanage with all 25 babies and children ranging from 1 –13 years old who are all awaiting adoptions. These girls reminded us of us; except they were giving their lives to helping orphan babies in Haiti and we were not. The two McMurtrie sisters from Pittsburgh, PA have been running the BRESMA Orphanage for three years. All 25 of the children who survived the earthquake are in the process of being adopted by American Families. However, now all of the paper work doesn’t exist and the people who’d be able to do anything about it, they don’t exist anymore either. As Gary Tuchman interviewed Jamie and Alison under the shady tree where they all lived
now- it just seemed so hopeless.

These poor children who were already orphaned by their birth parents- now were homeless.

There are efforts by Jamie and Alison’s family and U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan to bring the sisters and the children to the United States. According to 9 News there are around 40 Colorado families awaiting Haitian adoptions and one for sure from this agency.

According to their family, ’It’s a very complex situation and it’s requiring a lot of coordinated effort. We’ll let you know as soon as we have any details that can be released to the public. We’re happy for the community support we’ve received and we’ll need additional support as the children are brought in.’

We are moved and inspired by these young women who are fiercely committed to the children and getting them placed in the same kind of warm bed we’ll be sleeping in tonight.

Please Come to Oskar Blues in Lyons, CO for a night of great music and be part of something that’s helping just one little part of the Haitian devastation.

We give our word that 100% of the Money Will go directly to Jamie and Alison’s Orphanage and these children.

ODB – Old Double Bagger Barleywine

—American-style Barleywine Still a youngster at this point (3 months) Old Double Bagger (ODB for short) has a long life ahead of it. At 13.2% ABV and 100 IBUs this ale will age for years and develop over time. Look for a straight forward spicy citrus character from the exclusive use of Columbus hops and the considerable alcohol with a subdued malt background. This is a work in progress and we look forward to seeing how it ages.

Sour Cherry Barrel-aged Ten FIDY

—Imperial Stout aged in oak barrel with tart pie cherries The infamous Ten FIDY imperial stout aged for 10 months in an oak barrel with 36 pounds of tart pie cherries added after 7 months. A slightly lactic character carouses with big alcohol, cherries and roasty-chocolate flavors. The cherry cordial in liquid form. 10% ABV

GORDON

— Imperial Red/Double IPA – Our “Velvet M-80” is a luscious, double-red ale with a gooey aroma, a sticky mouthfeel, a malty middle and unctuous hop flavors. Gordon also sports a surprisingly comfortable finish for a beer of its hefty size (8.7% ABV, 60 IBUs). It’s brewed in tribute to Gordon Knight, a Colorado craft beer pioneer and Vietnam vet who died fighting a 2002 wild fire outside of our Lyons hometown.
