Lou, our new beertender from upstate New York, has been missing home sumpin’ fierce & who are we to deny him the finer things of his home state?

On Tuesday, our brewers, Dave Chichura and Eric Huber met up with the Crafty Ladies, Highland Tap & Burger’s (Denver) beer club, at the Oskar Blues brewpub in Lyons to brew-up specialty beer the group had decided on together in the weeks prior. The beer they settled on is a stout made with chai-spices and rye, and will ring in around 6.5% ABV. The beer should be ready in time for the Crafty Ladies Holiday Party at The Tap on December 6th.

“When Dale saw that over 60 women gathered to hear about and drink our beer he was inspired and suggested right then that the Ladies and I design and brew a special beer just for them. This is a great, enthusiastic group of women who appreciate and are knowledgeable about beer.” said head brewer Dave Chichura.

“It makes perfect sense for women to enjoy beer and Oskar Blues is a superb brewery to feature in their beer-explorations. Everyone likes flavor, especially women, and Oskar Blues Brewery beers deliver on that…” – Ginger Johnson, founder/Women Enjoying Beer An article on Craftbeer.com states that women are one of the biggest growth drivers for the craft beer industry, and in 2010, 27% of women said they enjoy beer over wine or liquor, up 6% from 2009.

During the Great American Beer Festival in September, Highland Tap & Burger hosted an Oskar Blues event involving the launch of a new firkin called “The First Lady,” a GUBNA Imperial IPA and Mama’s Little YELLA PILS blend that expired in 38 minutes. They served the beer alongside Oskar Blues’ popular Beer Can Chicken. “There are so many great events at Highland Tap & Burger with both the Crafty Ladies and with Oskar Blues throughout the year! The active promotion of local craft brews by both the Tap and the Crafty Ladies Beer Club makes trying new beers really easy…” - Nicol Winkler, HTB – Crafty Lady http://twitter.com/ThirstyGerman

The Highland Tap & Burger “Crafty Ladies Beer Club” started in early 2011. Twice a month the group meets to learn about a different brewery and their beers. “The more I talk to women about craft beer, the more I realize how underrepresented they feel as a voice in the industry. I have been thoroughly impressed by how many of our Crafty Ladies are home brewers, work in the craft beer industry, and are often times more knowledgeable and opinionated about what beers they enjoy than their male counterparts. That is why it means so much to the Crafty Ladies to be asked to collaborate with Oskar Blues… It really is an honor, and there are many women and men alike that can’t wait to taste the results!” - Katie O’Shea Padro, Director of Crafty Ladies

For those who haven’t heard, we’re re-launching our “Can Can Girls Club” in January 2012. The club is a place to explore and learn about craft beer in a fun, friendly and social environment. The gatherings are scheduled to include beer education in all aspects while engaging with the local community through various beer related activities.

Stay tuned for information about the release of the Crafty Ladies brew!

On Monday, July 18th 2011, 17 brewer-cyclists from Avery Brewing, Oskar Blues Brewery, Ska Brewing and Sierra Nevada Brewing will depart on their bicycles from Avery Brewing Company in Boulder to kick off the Third Annual Tour of BoulDurango: a five day, 470 mile odyssey over 6 majestic mountain passes from Boulder to Durango. En route, these 17 hearty souls will be stopping at craft breweries and brewpubs in an effort to bring together Colorado brewers, raise money for local charities, and encourage the spirit of collaboration and camaraderie that has taken hold in the craft beer industry.

The Tour of BoulDurango is the cycling incarnation of the attitude that these breweries have always taken towards the brewing business. “Craft beer isn’t about getting rich and cutthroat business practices; it’s about following your passions and doing what you love, it’s about being part of your local community and working with people who are just as psyched to be in the business as you are” said Adam Avery, President and Brewmaster of Avery Brewing Company. Dave Thibodeau of Ska Brewing added, “We’ve had quite a few brewers from around the country express interest in this– I think it has the potential to become huge, whether it remains a brewer’s tour and another fun way to hang out with fellow brewers while trying to make a positive difference in our communities, or one day possibly opens to the public.”

Last year Oskar Blues joined Avery and Ska on the tour, sans Dale Katechis of Dale’s Pale Ale fame, but this year he’ll be along for the ride. Steve Grossman and others from Sierra Nevada Brewing will also be joining their Colorado brewing brethren, growing this event outside the borders of Colorado for the first time.

Each evening, after the day’s riding is finished, the brewers are teaming up with other craft breweries along the course to hold fundraising parties, with profits from pint sales, raffles and auctions going to local charities. Participating breweries along the route include: Tommyknocker Brewing, Breckenridge Brewery, Eddyline Brewpub, The Brick Oven Restaurant, Ouray Brewing, Colorado Boy Brewery.

The ride concludes at 2PM on 7/23 at Ska Brewing in Durango with a Finish Line/Tapping Party for Wheelsucker Wheat Ale, a collaboration beer brewed by Ska and Avery to commemorate the ride. Proceeds will go to the La Plata County Safe Roads Coalition.

Keep an eye out for daily updates from the 2011 Tour of BoulDurango at http://oskarbluesbrewsbikes.blogspot.com/

High Mountain Passes Climbed:
Loveland Pass – 11,992′ ~ Hoosier Pass – 11,532′ ~ Cottonwood Pass – 12,126’

In January 2011, about 30 current and perspective hop growers gathered in a barn in Paonia, Colorado. In the center of Colorado Hop country, that cold winter day, the development of the Colorado Hop Growers Association began.

Last weekend, Oskar Blues Brewery and the OB Hops and Heifers Farm hosted the first annual Colorado Hop Growers Association meeting. The inaugural event hosted 70 participants spanning five states. This group represented hop farmers managing ½ acre to over 1700 acres of production. The Association was designed to educate regional hop growers regarding specific cultural practices to improve plant health and yields through sustainable production techniques. The Association also aims to bridge the gap between local craft breweries and the local hop grower.

Presenters included some of the most experienced minds in hop production.

Dr. Ron Godin (Agronomist) from Colorado State University Extension discussed, “Hops 202: Hop Yard Work from Spring Thaw to Fall Bedtime.”

Ali Hamm (Hop Specialist) from Summit Plant labs, Fort Collins, Colorado presented, “Hops Quality, Good Enough for Brewers.”

Dr. Fran Stonaker (Specialty Crops Coordinator), Assistant Professor Colorado State University, lectured on “Integrative Pest Management for Hops.”

The key note speaker and special guest was Mr. Bruce Wolf (Owner/Grower), Willamette Valley Hops, St. Paul Oregon. He led a discussion regarding “Hop Farming in the Willamette Valley for a combined 7 generations.”

The Tasty Weasel Tap Room at Oskar Blues Brewery was the lecture venue. The group later enjoyed brewery tours and a catered lunch from Oskar Blues Home Made Liquids and Solids Restaurant. For the afternoon session, the group traveled 6 miles to the new Oskar Blues Sustainable Hops and Heifers Farm. Here, the Association enjoyed craft beers from across Colorado while engaging in a question and answer session with Geoffrey Hess (OB farmer) within the OB Hops and Heifers hopyard and cattle barn.

To end a successful meeting, Chef Jason Rogers and his crew at Oskar Blues Home Made Liquid and Solids catered a dinner spread under the hop vines on the back patio of the restaurant. Colorado brews were served by participating breweries: Oskar Blues, Odell, New Belgium, Tommy Knocker, Palisade Brewing, Asher & Funkwerks.

The Colorado Hop Growers Association is grateful to all who attended and helped make this inaugural event such a success. Hop farming in Colorado is alive and well. Ali Hamm of Summit Plant Labs was quoted “It was a beautiful site to see the Colorado hop growers all under the Oskar Blues roof!” Learn more at www.coloradohopgrowers.com
