CHAKA, The first craft beer in a re-sealable 16oz. aluminum bottle, will debut at the Craft Brewers Conference on May 3rd 2012.

We teamed up with our buddies from Indiana-based Sun King Brewery for a CANlaboration project to unite the brewer’s friendship and passion for pushing the boundaries of craft beer in a can. Brewers from Oskar Blues and Sun King made the trek to each others breweries for months, and are excited to bring you CHAKA, a limited-release Belgian-style ale — the first craft beer to be packaged in the Alumi-Tek® re-sealable pint bottle from Ball Corporation. CHAKA will be released May 3rd 2012 at the Craft Brewers Conference in San Diego in each attendee’s hotel room and at special events throughout the weekend (see below!). The following week the brewers will make limited quantities available at the Oskar Blues Tasty Weasel Taproom and in Sun King’s home market.

The connection between these two breweries is deeper than the fact that they both can their beer. Our head brewer, Dave Chichura, began his professional brewing career in Indianapolis fifteen years ago where he became friends with Dave Colt and Clay Robinson, the two brewers who created Sun King. The three friends have been talking for years about working together on a collaborative beer, so when the opportunity came to assist in the introduction of a new packaging option for craft beer, it was an easy fuh-CAN-yea!

The end result is an 8 percent A.B.V. Belgian-style ale crafted with a blend of ingredients from each brewery’s home state: Shagbark Hickory syrup from Hickoryworks in Trafalgar, Ind.; grain from Colorado Malting Company; and a special yeast blend from Brewing Science Institute, also in Colorado. Brewers from both breweries worked together to formulate the recipe and traveled between Colorado and Indiana to brew at both locations.

Clay from Sun King weighed in on the brew: “Until we undertook this project, only large breweries and beverage companies had access to this type of packaging. Sun King and Oskar Blues worked closely with the Ball Corporation and Cask Brewing Systems to design and build a simple, functional small scale system that will allow craft brewers to take advantage of this unique packaging option.”

And our marketing dude, Chad Melis, threw in his 2-cents: “Unique packaging like the Alumi-Tek bottle provides both Oskar Blues and Sun King the differentiation we need to make our limited-release beers and B.Stiff & Sons Old Fashioned Root Beer (Oskar Blues Brewery) distinct from our core lines. Craft beer in aluminum bottles is another step forward in the evolution of craft beer.”

Available for purchase at the Tasty Weasel Taproom, for $17.50 a 4-pack. You can also get your hands on CHAKA and meet the brewers from both breweries at a few events taking place during this weeks Craft Brewers Conference in San Diego:

What: Oskar Blues Grill & Brew 15th Anniversary Celebration

Where: Oskar Blues Grill & Brew in Lyons, Colorado

When: Saturday, April 28th

We’re throwin’ back to 1997 and celebrating 15 years of soul food, live music and great brews at Oskar Blues Grill & Brew in Lyons, ColoRADo.

Our funky little brewpub was born 15 years ago when Dale and his wife stumbled across Lyons, Colorado on a road trip. That trip began many Colorado-born inspirations and experiences that have shaped what Oskar Blues is today.

On April 28th, the 15 year celebration at the Lyons, Co brewpub will include two live bands – Interstate Stash Express & The Informants, a pig roast/crawfish buffet, specialty brews, and a full day of family activities including a live petting zoo, housemade Rootbeer, commemorative t-shirts, Oskar Blues race car appearance, photo booth and a local artist gallery from 1pm to 5pm.

The day will also serve as the official launch of a few new libations: The 15th Anniversary Abbey Ale in new 16oz cans along with the official CAN launch of B. Stiff and Sons Old Fashioned Rootbeer. Oskar Blues is canning the same Rootbeer that has been served in their restaurants over the past few years named in tribute to Brian Stiff, a Lyons local and father of two who unexpectedly passed away on February 11th.

A note on Brian Stiff from Dale: “Brian was one of our bike riding buddies. He lived up in Lyons, and it’s just an awful, awful story…” Stiff died unexpectedly in February. Since then, “Our friends in Lyons have been looking for ways to help his widow and two young children and canning the root beer, with a portion of the proceeds going to the family, is our way to do that.”

So, come on down and join us in Lyons on Saturday, April 28th for a FULL DAY of festivities, and let’s PARTY LIKE IT’S 1997!

We’re teaming up with Kelty, a local company based out of Boulder, Colorado, and the first company to create a backpack with a frame, and Red Rocks Amphitheater to launch the 2012 Red Rocks Basecamp Giveaway. Fans of craft beer in a CAN, great music, and high quality outdoor gear will have a chance to win the ultimate ColoRADo experience that includes:

- round trip airfare for 2 to ColoRADo

- stylin’ transportation in the Dale’s Pale Ale RV

- 2 nights of hotel accommodations

- a slew of Kelty Basecamp gear, complete with a Kelty Hula Shadehouse, two Lowdown Chairs, Folding Cooler, LumaCamp lantern, and Soft-Top Table (RAD!)

- full access to the “Oskar Blues Ordeal,” a combination of everything OB including a brewery tour, dinner & beers, and a big ol’ load of OB swag

- PLUS a VIP Red Rocks concert experience including a live show and backstage passes & a Kelty/Oskar Blues parking lot tailgate

Kelty and Oskar Blues, two very outdoor-minded businesses, share a passion for good times under the great big blue. The Red Rocks Basecamp Giveaway is a way for us to come together and share the ride with our people, the fans who support us.

The Red Rocks Basecamp Giveaway kicked off in early April and runs through the end of July. On August 1, 2012, five finalists will be determined by random drawing from all eligible entries. To win the Big Kahuna, the five finalists will be asked to answer a few questions and write a blurb about why they dig the combo of craft beer in a can, music, and the great outdoors. Oskar Blues and Kelty will put their heads together (likely over a few beers…) and pick the entrant with the most entertaining and compelling response.

Some of you may be weary of this so called “blurb”, but what we’re really trying to get at is sharing this SWEET extravaganza of Colorado, craft beer, music, and the outdoors with someone that digs this stuff as much as we do.

For more information on how to enter & giveaway details visit www.Kelty.com/DalesPaleAle.

Our team is racing May 27, June 30, August 11, September 2, and September 29 – plus, we’re opening up the season with a special run this weekend, 4/21.

We’ll be doing beer samplings at the race track on select dates, and Mama’s Little Yella Pils CANS will be available there all season long. In addition, the Dale’s Pale Ale 2-seater ride along car will be displayed at the track on our car’s race days. Wanna ride? Fans will be able to experience the high speed thrill of turning some laps in a real NASCAR vehicle with an accomplished driver!

And on June 30th, Oskar Blues is hostin’ an all out, OB-style ho-down at the race track. We’ll have the Bonewagon Food Truck, beer samplings, a special VIP area, and the Oskar Blues Fireworks Show.

The races at CNS are only the beginning of the racing season’s festivities, as the team and car will make several appearances along the Colorado Front Range as well. We have several “meet and greets” set up locally with the driver & team, and of course, the car! We’ve already made a stop at Tipsy’s Liquor World a few weeks ago!

Rocky Mountain Motorsports is owned by Kevin & Melissa Steinke who live in Morrison, Colorado. Kevin and Melissa have been fortunate enough to have the services of Cris Muhler to drive their race car. Cris has been driving stock cars for over 20 years and has raced almost every type of car that competes at CNS, winning in all of them.

A few month’s back, we got to thinkin’ of some things we’ve never done, and partnering up with a race team was one of them. So we thought, why not! That’s our style – pushing boundaries while tying local communities together. Local racing, local beer, local people. A match made in our race car heaven! CAN ya dig it?

Lagunitas Beer Dispensary at HMLS
4/20/12
4:20pm

After a little hiatus from Colorado, Lagunitas is back! From their flagship IPA & Censored Ale to their more limited beers like The Hairy Eyeball, Lil’ Sumpin’ Sumpin’ & Undercover Investigation Shut-Down Ale, Lagunitas beers have been a staff & crowd favorite at Homemade Liquids & Solids. With both Oskar Blues & Lagunitas making genre-bending beers, we wanted to be the folks to help Lagunitas take Colorado by storm. We’ll be featuring Lagunitas IPA on draft & our friend Ian from Lagunitas is arranging some special kegs to bee-line their way to Longmont. We don’t know what Ian has in store for us yet..could be Gnarleywine, might be Shut-Down Brown, maybe some rare Waldo Double IPA. No matter what Ian can rustle up for us, we promise it’ll be awesome! IPA will be on draft all day & we’ll begin dispensing the specialties at 4:20 pm…and no, you won’t need a note from your doctor to get some of the hoppy-dankness.

Funk’n Wild Sour & Wild Beer Club
4/21/12
3-6pm

One of our favorite beer chicks, Chandra, has an addiction to sour ales, like hardcore addiction. She approached us a few months back about starting a sour club that will meet about every 3 months at Homemade Liquids & Solids. We said “go for it!” & boy did she deliver! Our first meeting beings at 3 pm & will go until about 6 pm at the upstairs bar. We’ll be featuring American craft beers from FunkWerks, Russian River, Strange Brewing, Crooked Stave, & New Belgium. And here’s the kicker…If any brewer in Colorado could be nicknamed “The Godfather of (Beer) Funk”, it would be Eric Salazar from New Belgium Brewery & he’ll be our featured speaker! He’ll discuss things New Belgium, things sour, & answer your questions. This is a free event & always will be!

WHAT: Iron Monkey Tap Project 3,6,5 Launch

WHEN: Thursday, May 3 at 6:00 p.m

WHERE: The Iron Monkey, 99 Greene St., Jersey City, NJ

We’re partnering up with Iron Monkey to launch Tap Project 3, 6, 5 on May 3rd to help promote Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy’s Project 365 Jersey City Green Week.

Kicking off on Thursday with a Meet the Brewer event with Dale Katechis, Tap Project 3,6,5 will help promote the Jersey City biking community. From Thursday (5/3) – Saturday (5/5), $2 from every Oskar Blues draft purchased from tap numbers 3, 6 and 5 will be donated to help purchase new bike racks for area businesses. The Oskar Blues drafts that will be part of the Tap Project 3, 6, 5 are Dale’s Pale Ale, Deviant Dale’s IPA and Mama’s Little Yella Pils.

Dale, and Oskar Blues as a brand, are ardent supporters of environmental causes and advocates for green and sustainable living, being the country’s first craft brewer to package and sell our brews in cans, which are nearly 50 percent lighter to ship than bottles, and reduce our carbon footprint significantly.

In addition to that, we’re major bike enthusiasts (check out REEB Cycles!).

“We live and breathe bikes and beer 365 and are stoked the Iron Monkey chose an Oskar Blues “Meet the Brewer” night to promote the Jersey City biking community,” Katechis says. “We support a boatload of cycling events, ranging from our local Bicycle Longmont G’Knight Cruiser Ride that hosts a few thousand riders to the backcountry of the Breckenridge and Leadville 100 mountain bike races…and hell, we dig ‘em all.”

With Oskar Blues’ support, The Iron Monkey is pledging to purchase at least one bike rack for a local business, and hope to raise enough funds to purchase more.

In addition, the Iron Monkey is also partnering with Grove Street Bicycles. As a three-year sponsor of Bike JC’s city-wide Ward Tour, the Iron Monkey is a supporter of city bicycling. In order to encourage bike usage, we’re donating a $10 restaurant gift card for every bike purchased between May 3 and May 5.

“It’s Green Week in Jersey City, and Oskar Blues is one of the greenest companies that we work with,” says Stephen McIntyre, owner of The Iron Monkey. “It felt like a natural partnership, and will give us the chance to do something good, while drinking really great beers.

There’s a lot goin’ on here at Oskar Blues. If you’ve had the chance to stop by the brewery, you’ve seen it first hand. For those who haven’t, here’s a brewery update from Jim Weatherwax, our Plant Manager:

Just wanted to keep everybody up to date on current happenings here at 1800 Pike.

We have officially sent the old can system out of the building! Upslope has completed the loading of the equipment and we now have room for the new Bright Beer tanks and more fermentation! The drain for the south cellar is complete and we are waiting for the concrete to cure before we epoxy the new area. The Can line CIP system (clean in place – makes it easier to clean our heat exchanger and wort lines) and Hot Liquor systems have been moved and are back in full operation. We are on schedule for the two 400bbl tanks to arrive next Friday and they will be up and running with a target date of 4/10. We will prep for the May, June and July tanks before they all arrive so we can get the beer flowing thru them as soon as possible. Below is a picture of the area where the line was that will become south cellar and new brite beer tank area.

The new 20 meter filter is on a boat somewhere between Italy and Long Beach Harbor and will be in house in the coming weeks. This will be a great help to the cellar crew.

We have completed the search for brewhouse upgrades and will be ordering all parts and look to implement the last week of May. This will allow us to do 9 brews per day and includes automated water tempering, valve controls and consistent knockout speeds.

As for the Weasel, the first step is the cooler move Friday, then we can work to get the new draft system built while they build the new patio. Once that is done they will install the big doors and take the walls out. We will have a good idea of final time lines within the next week or 2.

We are still in planning stages for the future and will be sharing news as it becomes available.

And there you have it OB fans. The most recent information about what Oskar Blues is up to. Cheers!
