    January 2007

    Greetings!

We hope everyone had a great holiday season. We are ready to kick off 2007 with some great new brews, great tasting food and as always, the best place for live entertainment!

    Gordon to go!

A fresh batch of Gordon four packs are now hitting Colorado shelves. Look for them at Argonaut Liquors, Boulder Liquor Mart, Superior Liquors, Colorado Liquor Mart (on Colorado Blvd in Denver) and other stores. Need a spot closer to home? Ask your local retailer to bring Gordon into your neighborhood store.

    Beer News

Our bodacious, divinely dark and malty Ten FIDY Imperial Stout is dropping jaws at our pub. Stop in and try a glass of our mighty winter seasonal while it lasts! It's a massive, (10.5% abv), roasty, mouth- massaging, ultra stout made with a small mountain of malts and a big wallop of oatmeal. Perfect for cool weather sipping.

Mama's Little Yella Pils is the newest addition to our brewhouse. Just tapped on 12/23/06, this Czech-style Pilsner (the first lager produced with our 20 bbl brewhouse) is the pale ale of lagers. Made primarily with German Pilsner malt (plus a thouch of Carafoam and Caramalt) this Pils is a clear golden color. Four additions of Saaz hops from the Czech Republic lend a spicy-floral hop component which plays nicely with the grainy malt character to create a clean, crisp beer of exceptional drinkability.
This is a draft-only offering and currently available only at Oskar blues. This is Mama's secret to get through the day!

    January Music

We start off the new year with our well-supported Bluegrass pick and open stage, hosted by K. C. Groves and or Eric Thorin on Tuesday January the 2nd and continue every Tuesday from 8-11pm in our upstairs lounge. Bring over your acoustic instrument and join in on the fun and play with some of the finest pickers in Boulder County.

Friday the 5th brings back A.O. A. (Alive on Arrival) from Denver featuring the fabulous Laura Newman on Sax and Creighton Holly on vocals and guitar. Creighton is from Chicago originally and spent many years with the Chicago Rhythm and Blues Kings and other national acts, Laura has been a staple on the Denver jazz scene for many years and can play sax as well as any man.

Saturday the 6th has Lionel Young and his very funky electric violin sounds coming to Oskar's. With the recent passing of the Godfather of Soul - James Brown, Lionel assures lots of funky JB standards in his memory.

Friday the 12th will be a really big show with Miss Blues Oklahoma Blues hall of fame winner in 2004, this robust 70 year old will delight you with her big blues shouting style. She is the real deal that you surly don't want to miss, Curly "no shoes" Jr.'s band will back her up admirably.

Then another great female Blues lady on the 13th will be Tempa and The Tantrums voted best blues band in Denver by Westword 2006. You better get there early for Tempa because the place fills with party folks when she comes to town.

On the 19th The Shaman's will appear at Oskar's for the first time a relatively new group to the Denver are they are getting lots of attention with their rockin' blues style fronted by another woman Gretchen who can really belt it out. Jasco is their guitarist from Blind Dog Smokin' and a very good one at that.

Saturday the 20th we welcome Rex Peoples formally vocalist with African Wind, has started his own group with some very good local musicians (including Van Morrison's drummer) and other all-stars. This is a show I am looking forward to with Rex able to showcase his vocal prowess.

The last weekend will be every special with the long awaited return of Andrew Jr. Boy Jones from Texas a W.C. Handy award nominee who has a new Live CD out and played at the age of 16 with Freddy King and recorded and worked with Katie Webster and Charlie Musselwhite to name a few. If you like rockin' Texas style blues guitar don't miss this show.

We end the month on the 27th with local favorites the Rhythm All-Stars who will surely make you want to get up and dance the night away, so wear the appropriate shoes that night. Come on over and support live music.

    Comedy Night
    January 10th Showtime 8 p.m.

This month we welcome Comedy Hypnotist Rusty Z. After a successful 14 year career as a stand-up comedian (appearing on such television shows as A&E's Evening at the Improv and The Dennis Miller Show, James R. Zingleman decided to switch gears (and persona) and do a stage hypnosis act. He studied both stage hypnosis and hypnotherapy with some of the best instructors in the field. James is a certified member of the National Guild of Hypnotists. Under the alias Rusty Z, James has been putting volunteers to sleep and bringing out their hidden talents on stages across the United States. Rusty Z's mastery of rapid hypnotic inductions and his comedic background, not to mention his groovy- hipster stage persona, make his hypnosis parties a cut above the usual stage hypnosis show. Rusty Z's Hilarious Hypnotic Happenings are always in good taste and nobody is embarrassed, except maybe the skeptics who didn't believe in hypnotism before the show started!

Tickets on sale now $10- includes a wine, well or draft beer.

    Shulbok Anyone?

So what is Shulbok? We think it’s just a game- based on the traditional Dutch shuffleboard game called “Sjoelbak”. It was popular in the Netherlands for several hundred years, and still is, with a rich heritage through time in places like Belgium, Germany, and of course England (the birthplace of shuffleboard).

Now you can play right here at Oskar Blues. Come check it out!
